Flashlights in the hands of young men, green lasers and fireworks light up the darkness of the night, while the sounds of Palestinian songs break the silence, and the smell of burning tires permeates the place.

In the village of Beita, near the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian residents do not provide a way to disturb settlers who have established an informal outpost in the area, in order to force them to leave.

The town of Beta (17,000 people) is located among several mountainous heights, including Jabal Sabih, on which the settlement outpost was established, and inhabited by nearly 50 families, since last May.

The youth of the town of Beta adopted the method of night confusion, after nearly two months of popular resistance activities, which were embodied in peaceful mass rallies.

The activities of night confusion continue daily until dawn, represented by burning tires, in addition to the many methods that the population adopts to protect and defend their land.

Since the beginning of May of 2021, the Beta, which has an area of 18,000 dunams, has witnessed the establishment of a settlement outpost on the top of Jabal Sabih, which is in the middle of the town, where settlers have built mobile homes (caravans), provided them with electricity and water services, and paved roads inside focus within a few days.

Confusion units

"Emirates Today" met one of the organizers of the night confusion activities in the town of "Beta", and a member of the Youth Leadership in the Nablus Governorate, Ammar Al-Jaghoub, who says: "The town of (Beta) for nearly two consecutive months, has lost the atmosphere of calm and stability in all parts of the country. Times, due to the establishment of the outpost, and after the escalation of the occupation and settlement practices, the talk now has gone beyond the idea of mass rallies, where (Beta) is witnessing successive developments in the methods of popular resistance.

He added, "The night confusion that Beta is witnessing is one of the latest and most prominent methods of the popular resistance. We have formed a group of different field units of young people and residents, to carry out several tasks in the framework of defending our land and our mountain. The rubber unit has been working since the morning hours." Al-Baker to form a rising cloud of smoke, covering the highest peak of Jabal Sabih, which is located on its land, the settlement outpost.

"When they put these caravans at the foot of the mountain, Israel told the Palestinian liaison that they would stay here for a day or two," Raad, the head of the rubber unit, told AFP.

Within less than 50 hours, there were more than 20 adjacent caravans.

"These caravans will not remain on our land, even if all the villagers are martyred," he added.

Al-Jaghoub shows that the “torch unit” is one of the pillars of night confusion, as its activities begin daily with sunset, with the participation of approximately (200) young people from the town, carrying torches towards the focus, in addition to the two laser units and searchlights that work all hours of the night, to confuse and disturb the settlers .

A member of the Youth Leadership in Nablus says: “All the people of Beita town, old people, men, young men, and children participate in the activities of the popular resistance, especially the night confusion, in addition to the participation and presence of the residents of the neighboring villages. Beta town is witnessing a national and cohesive state. between all families and factions, to defeat the settlers and their outpost from Beta and Jabal Sabih.”

Confrontation

On the other hand, Muhammad Dweikat, a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the town of Beita, confirms that youth groups in the Nablus governorate are constantly innovating various forms of struggle and popular resistance, most notably the night confusion units, which are new methods of resisting settlements. and occupation.

Dweikat told Al-Emarat Al-Youm: "The forms in which the people of the town of Beita work are available and available methods of struggle that disturb the settlers, exhaust the occupation, and increase the size of its losses on a daily and continuous basis. They are also pressured means to expedite the removal of the settlement outpost."

He points out that the occupation is facing activities of night confusion and popular resistance using live and rubber bullets, sound and gas bombs, against the town's youth and participants in the events, pointing out that the forces carry out in the late hours of the night a campaign of arrests against the residents, where the number of detainees reached six young men, in addition to the repression Mass marches, closing the main entrance to the town, and all roads leading to Jabal Sabih.

As a result of the practices and attacks of the occupation, which the Beta is witnessing, four of its residents were martyred, namely, the martyr Prosecutor General Issa Daoud Barham (40 years), the Arabic language teacher, Zakaria Maher Hamayel (28 years), the young martyr Muhammad Saeed Hamayel, and the young martyr. Ahmed Zahi Bani Shamsa.

popular resistance

For his part, the director of the Office of the Settlement and Wall Resistance Commission in the northern West Bank, Murad Eshteiwi, says that the settlers’ ambitions emerged in Jabal Sabih three years ago, when they set up a colonial outpost at its top, while the same ambitions were repeated twice, but they were removed all the time, as a result of the activities of the resistance. popular.

Eshteiwi continues, "But this time the settlers insisted on establishing this outpost, as the number of settlement units in it during the first third of this June reached 40 units, with the entire infrastructure of electricity networks and water lines, as well as paved roads."

He points out that the popular resistance in the West Bank succeeded in removing the settlement outpost three times during the past years, adding, "This time, the popular resistance is witnessing a major national transformation in the development of new means and activities, represented by the participation of thousands of people from the town of Beita and the neighboring villages, with the participation of the Wall Resistance Commission and factions." National and Islamic action.

He added: "Night confusion units have been created, which start their activity on a daily basis from the early hours of the night until dawn, during which car tires are lit, laser beams are directed towards the windows in the focus, and loud horns are sounded near (Avitar)."

In a related context, the Director of the Office of the Resistance of the Wall and Settlement Authority in the northern West Bank indicated that the importance of Jabal Sobeih lies in its height, and its location in the middle of the villages of Qabalan, Yatma, and Beita, in the south of Nablus, and its location in the area linking central and northern The West Bank near the Za'tara checkpoint, which is controlled by the occupation.

According to Ishtiwi, the location of Jabal Sobeih comes as a continuation of the settlement line, which starts from the village of Kafr Qassem, and the settlements of Shaarei Tikva, Ariel, Kfar Taffouh and Ma'ale Ephraim, where this line crosses the West Bank, It separates its north from its center and south along the settlement road No. (5).

In clashes between the village's youth and the Israeli army, more than 300 others were wounded, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Although he was shot in the foot during a demonstration more than a month ago, the young man, Zia Ali, is keen to be among the demonstrators every evening.

"I will continue to come here, and we will continue to work in this way and resist until they leave our land," says Dia, who is draped in the Palestinian flag and wearing a keffiyeh while leaning on crutches.

"They will leave," said Ghaleb Abu Zaitoun, 77, who put a white keffiyeh on his head while holding a rosary in his hand and looking at the rising smoke.

"This peaceful action will force them to leave, which is better than direct confrontation, which makes us lose a number of our youth," he added.

After darkness falls on the village, young men move to a side opposite the mountain, and set tires on fire at close distances from the settlement, while others from far distances shine laser lights towards the settlement site.

Dozens of young men carrying torches flock to the nearest point of the settlement, and members of the Israeli army start firing stun grenades and tear gas in their direction.

"We will continue to work in this way until the smoke of rubber reaches their bedrooms," says a masked young man, his clothes and hands covered in black, while pushing a huge tire into the nearby fire.

The young Thaer Hamayel, who wore the keffiyeh of his brother Zakaria Hamayel, who was martyred in the place, repeats: "In this way or in another way, they must leave our land."

smoke

Settlers at the outpost said that tire smoke reaches their homes and pollutes them.

Tzipi Scott, one of the focus's founders, describes these Palestinian protests in a tweet as "simply crazy."

"We live in a cloud of carcinogenic smoke," he said. "Children are coughing and getting sick.

They talk about our expulsion and the destruction of our society.

This cannot continue.

Their village must be destroyed.”

Then-Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered the outpost to be evacuated, but former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu froze the decision.

The new Israeli government led by the far-right Naftali Bennett, a former head of the West Bank settlement council, has not yet dealt with this burning issue.

According to the Israeli anti-settlement organization, Peace Now, “a small group of people, without any authority, created facts on the ground that seriously harm Israel’s security,” and called on the new government to evacuate the outpost, because it weakens “the possibility of peace in the future.”
