The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Japan answers reporters' questions on Japan's wrong remarks concerning Hong Kong

Q: In response to a reporter’s question recently, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Nobubuki Kato and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi expressed their serious concern over the suspension of the publication of Hong Kong’s "Apple Daily" and called this a retrogression in Hong Kong’s freedom of speech and reporting.

What is China's comment?

A: The Japanese remarks seriously interfered in China's internal affairs and violated international law and basic principles of international relations. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this, and has lodged solemn representations with Japan.

Hong Kong is a society ruled by law. The Basic Law and National Security Law of Hong Kong clearly protect the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents in accordance with the law, including freedom of speech and press. However, press freedom is not a shield for illegal activities, nor is it a protective umbrella for anti-China activities against Hong Kong.

The action taken by the Hong Kong police against individuals and companies suspected of endangering national security is a just move to crack down on crimes in accordance with the law and effectively maintain the rule of law and social order.

The Chinese central government firmly supports the Hong Kong SAR government and the police in performing their duties in accordance with the law, and firmly supports all efforts to maintain national security and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

Since the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, Hong Kong’s society has returned to stability and the rule of law and justice has been upheld. The legal rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents and foreign citizens in Hong Kong, including Japan, have been better protected in a safer environment. An objective fact that cannot be denied.

The use of Hong Kong-related issues to blame China for no reason is a complete reversal of black and white, with ulterior motives.

Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong. Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, and no external forces have the right to make irresponsible remarks.

China once again urges Japan to abandon its wrong position, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and interfering in China's internal affairs under any pretext, and earnestly safeguard the overall situation of China-Japan relations.
