The US land borders with Mexico and Canada will remain closed for non-essential travel until a minimum of July 21, the US Department of Homeland Security said on Sunday (June 20).

The 30-day extension of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic comes after Canada announced a similar decision on Friday.

Border restrictions between the United States and Canada, in effect since March 2020, were initially scheduled to end on Monday.

In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security noted "positive developments in recent weeks" and said it was working, alongside other US federal agencies, with Canada and Mexico to "identify the conditions under which the restrictions may be relaxed in a safe and sustainable manner ".
