June 21, 2021 After almost 40 days, Paola Piras, the 51-year-old woman from Tortolì, woke up from a pharmacologically induced coma with 18 stab wounds by her former Pakistani-born partner Masih Shahid, on the morning of 11 May, when her son Mirko di 19 years old was killed in an attempt to defend his mother.

The news was anticipated by La Nuova Sardegna and confirmed by the leaders of the Assl of Lanusei, where the woman is hospitalized.

Paola Piras is taking important steps towards recovery but she is not yet out of danger: she breathes autonomously and has resumed feeding, but from her hospital bed she is looking for her son Mirko. For the moment he does not yet know the epilogue of the attack and the doctors of the Santa Maria della Mercede hospital fear that the news could aggravate his already delicate health conditions. It is likely that the woman will be told the terrible truth in a few days, when her conditions improve: to do so, the Santa Maria della Mercede hospital has already deployed a team of psychologists.

The coma had been induced pharmacologically by the resuscitators, to preserve his tormented body from the violence of his ex-partner who slashed almost all of his vital organs. Last Friday the Ianas Institute, the hotel school attended by Mirko - who this year should have graduated from high school - handed the diploma to his aunt Stefania and his brother Lorenzo. The news of Paola's awakening was much awaited by the Tortoliese community which now hopes that the woman can overcome the tragic moment: the discovery of the death of her son who lost his life to try to save her.
