The owner companies LKAB, SSAB and Vattenfall are behind Hybrit and the plans for fossil-free iron and steel production in the near future, and today an important step in that work was presented.

"The climate effect is enormous"

The three companies told a press conference that 100 tonnes of fossil-free iron fungus has already been produced at the plant in Luleå and that this shows that the project can be implemented.

- It is an important milestone for us, says Vattenfall's CEO Anna Borg.

- It is a huge leap in technology we present today. It develops and changes a thousand year old technology.

The climate effect of this is enormous and the same with our business development, says Martin Lindqvist, CEO of SSAB.

Rebid from Per Bolund

The idea was that Minister of the Environment and Climate Per Bolund (MP) would have attended the press conference, but the government crisis meant that he was full and the ministry was represented instead by State Secretary Annika Jacobson.

- This is a fantastic project and it is so fun that it looks like it can be implemented.

This is not just about iron fungus, but about industrial history, she says.

But it will require a doubled energy production by 2045 to be able to cope with that investment and other similar investments.

- And we have good opportunities to meet that, but it requires dramatically shortened and simplified decision-making processes, says Anna Borg.
