June 20, 2021 "The protection of human life, the rescue of refugees, support for those suffering in humanitarian crises, the reception of the most vulnerable, are commitments which the Italian Republic, in collaboration with the European Union and international organizations, does not it has never escaped, even in recent times marked by the pandemic ".

These are the words of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the World Refugee Day.



"International law provides protection for those who are forced to flee their home and country due to conflict, persecution, climatic conditions, natural disasters and famine. More than 80 million people are fleeing, according to the High Commissioner of United Nations which, to date, has to protect nearly 100 million individuals. Today's Day requires reflection to make the exercise of this international responsibility effective ", says the President of the Republic. "Individual stories and of peoples, even geographically close, appeal to our sense of solidarity, anchored to high moral and juridical duties".



Mattarella then thanked "the women and men of the various administrations who, with dedication and a spirit of service, ensure the operation of international protection on a daily basis" and private citizens, civil society organizations and religious institutions who "do their utmost in our country to assist refugees, including by promoting innovative experiences such as humanitarian corridors, a significant example of reception at European level ".



Cities lit up in blue


Ten Italian cities light up their symbolic monuments for World Refugee Day. Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo and Turin this night will give a luminous expression to the solidarity with the more than 82 million people in the world who have been forced to flee from wars, violence and persecutions, leaving the their loved ones, their homes and their lives to seek salvation elsewhere. From dusk the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona, the monumental fountain in Piazza Moro in Bari, Palazzo Re Enzo in Bologna, the Bastion of Saint Remy in Cagliari, the main balcony of Palazzo degli Elefanti in Catania, Torre San Niccolò in Florence, Palazzo Marino in Milan, the Maschio Angioino in Naples, the Massimo Theater in Palermo and the Mole Antonelliana in Turin,they will turn blue to promote the Together we can make a difference campaign - Together we can do anything launched by UNHCR, the UN agency for refugees.
