20 June 2020 On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella leaves a message about our country's commitment to strengthen it, also thanks to joint action with Europe.

"The phenomenon of migration relies on an Italian approach based on important instruments such as the national resettlement program and humanitarian corridors for particularly vulnerable refugees. Our protection and assistance action cannot deflect or weaken but must, on the contrary, be strengthened with the elaboration of a new course for the European Union in the field of migration and asylum, in the sign of a more incisive and shared common commitment ".

"The impact of the pandemic - underlines the Head of State - further aggravates the critical condition of those who, due to conflicts or the violation of fundamental rights, are forced to flee their country. Italy shows continuously and with sense of responsibility his closeness to those who face these dramatic events, offering hospitality and protection.

"Our active participation in the first Global Refugee Forum constitutes a concrete testimony".

For the President of the Republic, "the phenomenon of migration relies on an Italian approach based on important instruments such as the national resettlement program and humanitarian corridors for particularly vulnerable refugees, deprived of state protection in the country of origin and significantly affected by restrictions determined by the current health emergency ".

The Head of State then addresses "a heartfelt thanks to the women and men of the police forces and state administrations and to all the operators who provide the services necessary to guarantee international protection to those who are entitled to it".

"In this effort - concludes Mattarella - the International Organizations are also distinguished, and especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to which Italy ensures maximum support in line with its historical multilateral vocation".
