The Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced the release of Jamal Mustafa, son-in-law of former President Saddam Hussein, after 18 years of detention.

The ministry said in a document published by Iraqi media that "the Central Criminal Court decided to cancel the charges against Jamal Mustafa, to release him and release him from detention after the end of his sentence, unless he was wanted in another case."

She explained that the cancellation of the charges against Mustafa was due to "insufficient evidence", without further details.

Jamal Mustafa, 66, was an officer in the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Iraqi army, responsible for the file of tribal and clan affairs. He is the husband of "Hala", the youngest daughter of Saddam Hussein, and was among the wanted list in the former regime, as the United States decided to arrest them on charges related to the implementation of crimes against humanity.

On April 20, 2003, the United States arrested Mustafa, 11 days after toppling Saddam's regime.

In 2017, the Iraqi Council of Representatives issued a law confiscating movable and immovable funds for Saddam, his wife, children and relatives up to the second degree, and the law also included Jamal Mustafa.
