Regional and departmental councilors all have six-year terms, but the voting system is different.

Regional councilors are elected on a proportional basis from joint lists in twelve metropolitan regions to which are added Guadeloupe and Réunion.

The lists are regional, but the candidates present themselves in departmental sections.

To advance to the second round, the lists must obtain 10% of the votes cast in the first round.

The top list gets a majority premium of 25% of the seats.

The lists which obtained more than 5% of the votes distribute the rest of the seats.

Departmental elections in pairs

In departmental elections, formerly cantonal, it is female-male pairs who present themselves.

The ballot is majority: only the pair that comes first is elected.

To access the second round, it is necessary to obtain in the first round the vote of more than 12.5% of those registered.

In Paris and in the metropolis of Lyon, we only vote for the regional ones, because the municipal council and the metropolis exercise departmental powers.

In Corsica, Martinique and Guyana, by virtue of their statute, these are territorial elections governed by rules equivalent to those of the regional ones.
