In Hesse, more farmers want to contribute to insect protection with flower strips along roads and fields.

This year, the area of such flowering areas has grown to 5580 hectares, 580 hectares more than last year, the Hessian Ministry of the Environment told the German press agency.

“Above all, pollinating insects like wild bees play a huge part in our wellbeing.

Without them, plants cannot produce fruit and animals and people lose their nutritional basis, ”said Hesse's Ministry of the Environment, Priska Hinz (Greens).

"That is why we are particularly committed to protecting pollinating insects."

3990 hectares of flowering areas

This year, 3990 hectares of flowering areas would be funded by the state with 2.66 million euros through the HALM agri-environmental program.

In 1881 farmers decided to create annual and perennial flowering areas, according to the minister.

"That is another 186 active more than in the previous year."

In addition, there are 1,600 hectares of flowering areas through the joint initiative "Hesse's agriculture blooms for bees - farmers and beekeepers are partners" of the Hessian farmers' association and the state association of Hessian beekeepers. Lottery funds are also used to set up smaller communal areas.
