A month after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in Goma, in eastern DRC, decongestion of the city is on the agenda.

For specialists, this will prevent a disaster.

In May, the rush of residents to evacuate Goma caused huge traffic jams in the direction of the town of Sake.

It is the only road leaving from Goma to go south.

For Corneille Kanene, teacher at the Higher Institute of Architecture and Urbanism in Kinshasa (ISAU), this city of more than 600,000 inhabitants must absolutely be de-densified to avoid a disaster.

Create satellite cities

He evokes, at the microphone of our correspondent in Kinshasa,

Kamanda wa Kamanda,

the creation of cities around Goma to be able to accommodate the surplus population of the city: “

We must think about the construction of satellite cities which are not cities. dormitories, satellite cities within a radius of 40 kilometers. These are not new cities for us. The word

"city",

we don't want to approach it in those terms, because there are a lot of legal implications.

We believe that satellite cities are well-equipped cities, not just for living.

They are not dormitory cities, but they are cities equipped with all socio-community infrastructure and everything you need.

And for these satellite cities to be viable, mobility between the satellite cities and Goma, as the mother city, must be well assured.
