June 19, 2021 Concern for variants spread in Europe rises. In Moscow it concerns 83% of the sick, in Great Britain it has caused the peak of infections for 4 months. Minister Speranza has in fact ordered

the return of a 5-day quarantine

and the mandatory swab for those who come to Italy from the United Kingdom.

The Delta variant is making its weight felt: while in the United Kingdom it has made the curve of the epidemic rise, now close to the peak, in Moscow its presence has been recognized in 89% of Covid patients.

Most likely the circulation of this variant is also at the origin of the high numbers of the epidemic in Spain and Turkey, where the curve still cannot bend.

On the eve of summer and travel, the circulation of this new variant of the SarsCoV2 virus imposes new questions on strategies to limit its spread. Appeared in India at the end of 2020, the Delta variant has a mutation that makes it more aggressive and at the same time retained the mutation that had allowed the Alpha variant to become dominant.

Thus in just over six months it reached at least 74 countries, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). In February it made its appearance in the United Kingdom, where it soon became dominant and where the rebound of infections is accelerating.

Data from the British public health agency, Public Health England (Phe), estimate around 76,000 cases in the last week, mainly concentrated between England and Scotland, where Delta is now responsible for 99% of cases.

It is still data from the United Kingdom that indicate that the Delta mainly affects the younger age groups. Research from Imperial College London indicates that it is 2.5 times more common among those aged 5 to 49 than those over 50. The UK is also the country with the highest incidence in Europe, with 75 cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the analyzes of the mathematician Giovanni Sebastiani, of the Institute for the Applications of Calculation 'Mauro Picone' of the National Research Council (Cnr-Iac). This complex situation is also at the origin of the ordinance of the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, which from 21 June provides for a 5-day quarantine with the obligation of a swab for those coming from Great Britain.

If in most European countries all the incidence curves are downward or flatten to very low levels, the United Kingdom and Russia are not the only exceptions: Spain and Turkey also deserve attention, where the decrease in cases it is very slow and the incidence is respectively 66 and 50 cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants.

At the moment 23 European countries have a higher incidence than the Italian one, which is 19 cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants.

In Russia 17,906 cases in one day, peak since January 31

In Russia, 7,906 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the last 24 hours: the maximum number of infections detected in a single day since last January 31st. The national anticoronavirus operations center reported by Tass. 9,120 infections have been ascertained in Moscow alone, the maximum so far in the capital since the beginning of the epidemic.
