June 18, 2021 The UN General Assembly elected Antonio Guterres by acclamation for a second five-year term as Secretary General of the United Nations, starting January 1, 2022.

Born in Lisbon in 1949, he previously held the position of High United Nations Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), after serving as Prime Minister in Portugal from 1995 to 2002.

The UN Security Council voted unanimously to recommend that the General Assembly confirm him for a second term.

Guterres, in office since 2017, was the only official candidate.
