June 18, 2021 The national Rt contagion index remains stable this week and stands at 0.69, up from 0.68 last week. On the other hand, the weekly incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the key values for decisions on measures, falls: it is at 16.7 compared to 25 in the previous week. These are the data contained in the Covid Iss-Ministry of Health weekly monitoring draft, now being examined by the control room, which will be presented today.

All the Regions are classified as low risk except three: Basilicata, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Molise, which are at moderate risk. All have a Rt compatible with a type one scenario.

Hospitals below the critical threshold

No Region / PPAA exceeds the critical occupancy threshold for ICU or medical area beds. The employment rate in intensive care is 6%, below the critical threshold, with a decrease in the number of hospitalized people from 688 (08/06/2021) to 504 (15/06/2021).

The employment rate in medical areas nationwide drops further (6%). The number of people hospitalized in these areas goes from 4,685 (08/06/2021) to 3,333 (15/06/2021). Four Regions, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Molise, Puglia and Veneto, report an alert of resilience, none of them report multiple alerts.

A further decrease is observed in the number of new cases not associated with transmission chains (3,961 vs 4,992 the previous week). The percentage of cases detected through contact tracing activity is stable (40.3% vs 40.3% last week). The percentage of cases detected through the appearance of symptoms decreased (37.4% vs 38.6%). Finally, 22.4% were diagnosed through screening activities.

Vaccines essential

"The circulation of variants that may have greater transmissibility and / or partially evade the immune response, which has led to an unexpected increase in cases in European countries with high vaccination coverage, requires extensive case tracking and sequencing." This is what we read in the draft of the weekly monitoring report of the Ministry of Health and ISS. In Italy, the document underlines, the incidence is now well below the quota of 50 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, "a level that would allow the containment of new cases". Finally, according to the report, "the achievement of high vaccination coverage and the completion of vaccination cycles is an indispensable tool for the purpose of preventing further recurrence of pandemic episodes".
