BIRTH DOWN 5.9%

Spain registered a total of

339,206 births

in

2020

, according to provisional data from the Natural Population Movement published this June 17 by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which represents

a decrease of 5.9%

compared to the previous year (21,411 fewer births) and a decrease of 30.3% since 2010.

In this way, the number of births continues with the downward trend of the last decade, only interrupted in 2014. Furthermore, the figure for this 2020 marks a

new all-time low

since the beginning of the series, in 1941.

The decrease in the number of births was observed throughout all the months of 2020, although it was accentuated as of November.

The biggest drop occurred in December, with a reduction of 21.5% compared to the same month in 2019.

The statistic, whose source of information is the death bulletins of the Civil Registry, also addresses the

number of deaths in Spain

, which increased

by 17.7 percent during 2020

, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, during 2020 492,930 people died in Spain, the maximum since 1941, in the post-war era.

By months, the increases in deaths in March and April stand out, of 56.8 and 78.2 percent, respectively, compared to the same months of the previous year, coinciding with the worst moment of the pandemic.
