Texas may have a wall against Mexico, even though Donald Trump is no longer the President of the United States.

The state's Republican governor Greg Abbott wants to finish building the barrier, but the project is expensive and the $ 250 million that is being spent from the state budget is not enough.

That is why Abbott is now asking for further financial contributions from the public.

What the bill is expected to land on is still unclear.

Donald Trump made the wall that will hinder migration to the United States one of his election promises in 2016. When he was voted out in the presidential election last year and Joe Biden took over the post, construction stopped.

Since then, the number of migrants from Central and South America to the United States has increased significantly.

In May, the figure was the highest in 20 years, Dallas morning news reports.

Previous attempts

According to Greg Abbott, migration makes Texas border cities insecure.

Among other things, private property along the migrants' path is destroyed when, for example, crops are trampled down and fences are cut up, he says.

Previous attempts have been made to combine the budget for the wall with private financial contributions.

One of these ended with Donald Trump's former adviser Steve Bannon being arrested in August last year accused of having used the money himself instead.

Bannon was later pardoned by Trump.

Need to build on private land

However, it is doubtful how great the opportunities to continue building are, even if the financing had not been a problem.

Much of the land along the border is privately or federally owned and several of the owners have already gone to court to prevent the wall from being built through their property.

Greg Abbott's critics say the move is part of his campaign for next year's gubernatorial election.

Even Abbott's rival in the Republican election, Don Huffines, has promised to work for a barrier along the border with Mexico.

The White House declined to comment on Greg Abbott's plans.
