June 18, 2021 - The US Embassy in Kabul has been placed in lockdown due to a surge in coronavirus infections. "Military hospital resources for intensive care have reached full capacity in the compound's Covid department to treat patients in need of oxygen. 95% of cases are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated patients," reads a statement from the American embassy. All the staff of the diplomatic headquarters are confined except for the purchase of food and for physical exercise. There has been a 2,400% increase in cases in Afghanistan in the past month, according to data from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Hospitals are exhausted and medical supplies are scarce.
