The INE has published this Thursday the provisional data of deaths, births and marriages of 2020, which confirm the drama that the pandemic has caused in Spain: 17.7% more deaths, which soared since March;

5.9% fewer births, which fell especially in December, nine months after home confinement;

and 45.7% fewer marriages, which were annulled throughout Spain due to restrictions.

The vegetative balance for the resident population (births minus deaths) is thus very negative, with 153,167 fewer people. Spain had already accumulated several years with negative growth, but far from that figure. In 2019, it was 57,355 fewer people. Just a decade ago, in 2010, the balance was positive at 105,018 people.

During 2020, 492,930 people died in Spain, 17.7% more than in 2019. By months, it is worth highlighting the increases in deaths in March and April, of 56.8% and 78.2%, respectively, compared to the same months from the previous year. It is also worth mentioning the evolution of mortality from the month of August. Especially in October and November, when the number of deaths increased by 21.0% and 21.6%, respectively, with respect to the same months of the previous year. All these data coincide with the first and second waves of Covid-19. In total, the INE records that in 2020 there were 74,227 more deaths than in 2019.

Regarding births, 339,206 were registered in 2020, which represented a decrease of 5.9% compared to the previous year (21,411 fewer births).

The number of births thus continues with the downward trend of the last decade, only interrupted in 2014. Since 2010 the figure has fallen by 30.3%.

The decrease in the number of births was observed throughout all the months of 2020, although it was accentuated as of November.

The biggest drop occurred in the month of December, with a reduction of 21.5% compared to the same month of 2019. In this month, children conceived in March should have been born, so the data is directly related to home confinement decreed by the Government with the first state of alarm, on March 15, 2020.

Finally, 90,416 marriages were registered in 2020, 45.7% less than in 2019. The gross marriage rate decreased 1.6 points to 1.9 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.

It is the lowest value since 1976. The number of marriages was greatly affected from March.

In April and May the decreases were over 90% in both months compared to the previous year.
