The main Australian banks on Thursday reported outages affecting their online services, applications and websites as they tried to determine the cause as quickly as possible.

"We understand that some of our customers are currently having problems accessing our services," Australia's largest bank, Commonwealth Bank, told AFP.

"This problem affects multiple organizations, including many large banks," according to the same source.

Financial institutions Westpac, ANZ, ME Bank have all reported issues affecting their mobile apps or online banking products.

The outages began around 2:10 p.m. local time (0510 GMT) according to the Downdetector website.

Australian bank ANZ has told customers "at this time we don't know what time this will be fixed, please try to log in in an hour."
