"Green mushroom" .. its definition, causes, symptoms and methods of transmission

After cases of black, white and yellow fungus cases reported across India, CNBC-TV18 website says, a green fungus case was discovered in Indore city in Madhya Pradesh.

The patient recovered from COVID-19 and was asked to undergo some tests as doctors suspected he had black fungus.

But the pelvis proved to be infected with the green fungus.

This may be the first case of green fungus in India, according to the TV channel.

What is green mushroom?

Dr Ravi Dossi, Head of Thoracic Diseases at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences in Indore, says the disease is an aspergillosis infection while more research is needed on the fungus that causes it.

The site says that green fungus, or aspergillosis, is a rare infection caused by a common type of fungus known as aspergillus.

Found inside and outside India, this fungal lung infection is caused by the inhalation of certain "mold spores".

Aspergillosis joins the growing list of "colour-coded" fungal diseases that have emerged in patients and recovered COVID-19 patients.

Cases of black, white and yellow fungi were seen in the country in increasing numbers.

While these fungi are named after their colours, they are often caused by the same type of fungus.

"There are different types of fungal infections such as candida, aspergillosis, cryptococcus, histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis," CNBC-TV18 quoted Dr. Randeep Guleria as saying.

What causes green mushrooms?

Aspergillosis can occur simply by inhaling microscopic spores of the same type of mushroom.

Under normal circumstances, the body's immune system fights any germs, but in some cases, the body is not able to suppress the growth of germs.

Those who have a weakened immune system, recover, or have lung disease are more likely to develop aspergillosis.

The high number of fungal infections in COVID-19 patients is attributed to various factors, including lung damage, overuse of steroids, weak immune system, and low infection control in hospitals.

Fungal diseases are not transmitted from person to person or between humans and animals.

What are the common symptoms of green mushrooms?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among the symptoms of allergic aspergillosis sinusitis: congestion, runny nose, headache, and impaired ability to smell.

Symptoms of aspergillosis, or "fungus ball," include coughing, coughing up blood, and shortness of breath.

Weight loss, coughing up blood, tiredness and shortness of breath have been reported in people with CPD. Fever is a common symptom of invasive aspergillosis, which usually occurs in people who already have other medical conditions.

It can be difficult to tell what symptoms are associated with an Apergillus infection.

However, symptoms of invasive aspergillosis in the lungs are fever, chest pain, coughing up blood, and shortness of breath.

The CDC says other symptoms can develop if the infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body.

The CDC advises patients who have recently suffered from lung diseases, such as COVID-19, or who currently have a weakened immune system, to protect themselves by avoiding dust, dirt and other small particles from entering their lungs and using N95 masks.

How to prevent fungal infections

  • Fungal infections can only be prevented by maintaining physical hygiene.

  • Avoid areas with a lot of dust and contaminated water stored.

  • Avoid activities that involve close contact with dirt or dust.

  • Wash your face and hands with soap and water, especially when exposed to dirt or dust.
