For the American Minister of Justice, it was urgent to act.

Unveiling the government's new strategy against "domestic terrorism," Merrick Garland said the threat has increased dramatically over the past six months: "

The two deadliest elements of this threat are extremists who act for racial reasons, and violent militias.

"

This new strategy is one of Joe Biden's priorities.

In his inauguration speech already, the president had promised to fight against

political extremism

, white supremacism and "internal terrorism".

Merrick Garland announced a strengthening of cooperation between the various security agencies and the police.

An envelope of 100 million dollars will be devoted to recruitment within key departments of Justice and Homeland Security.

The authorities will also strengthen their collaboration with online platforms, now widely used by extremist groups.

This initiative was notably justified by the attack on the Capitol on January 6.

More than 480 people have since been arrested.

There will be no tolerance in our democracy for the use of violence as a means of settling political differences

 ", assures the minister.

Merrick Garland specifies, however, that the fight against "internal terrorism" does not in any way mean the fight against ideologies, thus ensuring respect for freedoms.
