• Two ultra-right activists were on trial this Wednesday in Saint-Gaudens, south of Toulouse, after posting videos of an anti-migrant operation in the Pyrenees.

Four months suspended prison sentence and 4,000 euros fine were required this Wednesday against Thaïs d'Escufon and Jérémie Piano, two ex-activists of Generation Identity, tried for posting videos of the "anti-migrant" operation »Conducted with their comrades on January 20, in the Pyrenees, on the Spanish border. Neither of the two defendants appeared at the hearing before the correctional court of Saint-Gaudens, in Haute-Garonne, one being held back by professional obligations, the other "on an electoral campaign in the North".

The 21-year-old Toulouse student, Anne-Thaïs du Tertre d'Escœuffant (her real name), was the very media spokesperson for Génération Identitaire until its dissolution in early March.

In this case, she is being prosecuted for “public insults”.

In his requisitions, the public prosecutor of Saint-Gaudens, Christophe Amunzateguy, explained that he had accepted this offense because of the video posted on YouTube by the activist.

He considers that she "stigmatized" the migrants by saying that it was "scandalous that a migrant could cross the border", suggesting that this constitutes a danger.

Provocation to racial hatred

Jérémie Piano was prosecuted for “provoking racial hatred”.

In the video he posted he mentioned "thousands of illegal immigrants already in France" including "probably thieves, rapists and potential terrorists".

Pierre-Vincent Lambert, the lawyer for the two activists recalled that the Pyrenean operation followed "the attack which cost Samuel Paty the life" and that of "the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Nice. ".

He regretted “the criminalization of anti-immigration discourse”.

The court is due to render its decision on September 9.
