June 16, 2021 Concerns about the alert of the Delta variant, imported to the island from India and now becoming dominant, increase in the United Kingdom, the effect of which has caused the number of new cases to bounce to over 9,000 (out of about 770,000 swabs) in the last 24 hours: national peak from the end of February. The impact on serious infections remains more contained, with hospital admissions on the rise, but at a slower pace thanks to vaccines, up to a sum no higher than 1,177 total patients at the moment. While the deaths continue to drop for now - 9 between yesterday and today, still at European lows, against 12 on the first day - albeit with the prospect of some delayed effect.

To try to bring the curve back under control, Boris Johnson's government and health authorities aim to further accelerate the Kingdom's record vaccination campaign, now extended to 20-year-olds, as well as postponing the exit from the latest lockdown restrictions from 21 June to no earlier than July 19th. In total, vaccine doses administered have thus risen to 72.5 million, including over 30 million boosters, with nearly 58% of the adult population now fully vaccinated and nearly 80% with at least one dose.
