There is much to suggest that delta, which in itself has about 13 different mutations, is more contagious than other variants of covid-19 - and it can even be 50 percent more contagious than the previously dominant alpha variant of the virus.

- It was in turn more contagious than this original variant that was spread a year ago, says Emma Frans in Morgonstudion.

The claim that you get other symptoms of the delta variant, for example, there have been British reports of headaches, is more uncertain according to Emma Frans.

- You monitor this and when you have talked about corona lately, you have talked about certain characteristic symptoms such as that the sense of smell and taste disappears, elevated body temperature and cough.

- But when you have studied this in the UK, there seem to be some other symptoms among the most frequent and you see this with headaches, sore throats and runny nose.

But as you know, there are also general corona symptoms, it can vary a lot.

"Sounds uncomfortable"

There have also been reports from India of nausea, vomiting and sudden hearing loss among those who have become seriously ill.

- It sounds unpleasant, but it can easily be the case that you report on what is unpleasant.

More systematic studies are needed to find out how common these types of symptoms are.

One dose of vaccine provides less protection

Another statement is that you get sicker from the delta variant.

- There are such reports and what you see is that it seems that you have a higher risk of becoming so ill that you need hospital care.

But not everyone agrees on this point.

- As for the alpha variant, this was discussed for a long time and it is only today that it is said that it gives a slightly more serious disease compared to the original variant.

Regarding the claim that vaccines do not protect as well against the delta variant, Emma Frans answers:

- What you see is that you have good protection against such a serious illness that you need hospital care if you have received two doses.

But what you see quite clearly here is that, unlike the previous variants, you do not have as good protection if you have only received one dose of the vaccine.
