The US-European Summit kicked off in the Belgian capital (Brussels), which brought together US President Joe Biden, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as the two parties agreed to settle a 17-year dispute over support for the aviation sector.

The summit will discuss relations between the two parties, as well as several issues, most notably the unification of positions towards China and Russia. The summit will also discuss other files, especially trade and defense issues.

It is expected that a joint council will be established to manage commercial relations between the two sides.

The Europeans hope that the meeting will be the beginning of the return of transatlantic relations to their traditional course, after years of tension under former US President Donald Trump.

The European-American summit comes a day after President Biden, who hails from Ireland, participated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, and two days after participating in the Group of Seven summit, which are stations in the first foreign visit of the American president since taking office in last January.

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Brussels, Abdullah Al-Shami, said that facing the challenges posed by China and Russia is not only presented at the European-American summit;

Rather, it was strongly present in the work of the NATO leaders' summit.

The correspondent added that the European leaders sent messages that they asked Biden to convey to his counterpart Putin when he meets him tomorrow, to the effect that the door for dialogue with Moscow is open as long as he does not interfere in the affairs of Eastern European countries, especially with regard to issues of espionage and threats to the sovereignty of states.

Reuters reported that the draft final statement of the summit stated that Washington and Brussels would commit to ending the dispute over aircraft support, and another dispute over punitive duties related to steel and aluminum.

US Trade Representative Catherine Taye discussed the dispute over aircraft support in a meeting with her European counterpart, Valdis Dombrovskis, on Monday, and they are scheduled to hold further talks today.

Aviation dispute

Today, Tuesday, the European Union and the United States decided to suspend reciprocal punitive customs duties related to the dispute between the airlines “Airbus” and “Boeing” for another 5 years, and the President of the European Commission stated, “This meeting began with a breakthrough. On aircraft. This really opens a new page in the relationship, as we have moved from litigation to cooperation on aircraft.” The two sides have been in a long-running trade dispute over aviation support at the World Trade Organization.

Diplomats say that freezing the US-European dispute over support for the European airline giants Airbus and the US Boeing, will allow more time for the two parties to focus on a broader agenda that includes concerns about the model of the economy, led by China, the second largest economy in the world.

And the news website Euronews quoted - quoting unnamed sources - that Biden is seeking to calm trade tensions with European allies, before his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, tomorrow, Wednesday, in the Swiss capital (Geneva).
