China News Service, June 16 According to Korean media reports, South Korean Foreign Ministry officials stated in an interview on the 15th that South Korea will participate in the election for a non-permanent member of the UN for the term of 2024-2025.

According to reports, the official said that to celebrate the 30th anniversary of South Korea’s accession to the United Nations, as a new opportunity to walk with the United Nations for another 30 years, he will participate in the election for non-permanent membership.

According to reports, this will be the third time South Korea has challenged its non-permanent membership.

South Korea was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 1996 to 1997 and from 2013 to 2014.

The Security Council is composed of 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. Non-permanent members have a two-year term, and 5 members are replaced every year.

The official said that so far, only South Korea has participated in the election in Asia.

South Korea was previously considered to be in place when serving as a non-permanent member of the council. There is currently no competing country, but in order to get more votes, a full canvassing campaign will be launched in September.

The report pointed out that if South Korea is to be elected as a non-permanent member of the Council, it needs to obtain the consent of more than two-thirds of the 193 member states in the UN General Assembly election in June 2023.
