President Biden of the United States and President Erdogan of Turkey met and confirmed that they would continue discussions to improve relations between the United States and Turkey, which had deteriorated due to the purchase of a Russian-made missile system by Turkey.

Both the United States and Turkey are in an alliance that is a member of NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

However, the United States strongly opposed Turkey's purchase of Russia's state-of-the-art surface-to-air missile system S400, and in December last year it imposed unusual sanctions on Turkey, worsening relations.

Under these circumstances, President Biden and President Erdogan, who are visiting Brussels to attend the NATO summit, met for the first time on the 14th.

After the meeting, the two leaders each held a press conference, President Biden said, "It was a positive and productive meeting," and President Erdogan said, "It was a productive meeting. There are more areas in which the two countries can cooperate than in problem areas. Both leaders confirmed that they would continue discussions to improve the relationship.

President Biden is aiming to unite allies to counter China and Russia, and it seems that he wants to restore relations with Turkey at this summit meeting from such speculation.
