Sofie Olofsson is a botanist and curator at the Botanical Garden in Lund.

She pulls out and helps SVT Nyheter Skåne to identify the plants outside Medborgarhuset where Burlöv's politicians and officials sit.

Sofie Olofsson smells, feels and looks carefully at a 15 cm high plant.

- Now this is a very young plant and it can be difficult to identify small cannabis plants.

It is a bit sticky and has a special scent.

It definitely looks like a cannabis sativa, says botanist Sofie Olofsson.

Marijuana or hemp?

But what kind of cannabis is it?

Marijuana and hemp are two different varieties of the plant cannabis sativa.

Marijuana has higher levels of the active substances THC and CBD and is illegal.

Hemp, on the other hand, contains very small levels of THC and CBD.

To grow hemp, a permit from the Swedish Board of Agriculture is required.

The question is how did these plants end up in Burlöv's municipal flower beds?

- The fact that it is cannabis sativa does not necessarily mean that this is a variety that contains active substances, which is what marijuana is made of.

It is much more likely that it is spread from bird seed mixtures.

There may be hemp seeds that need to be sterilized.

But hemp seeds do not contain active substances in any amounts.

Pulls one of the plants

Sofie Olofsson pulls up one of the plants.

- These will be 1.5-2 meters high if they remain. I'll take it back to the department. It will be interesting to show my colleagues.
