India, "Delta Plus" variant seems to resist monoclonals

In India, scientists following the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic have announced that they have identified a mutation of the Indian variant (ie the B.1.617.2 strain), renamed "Delta" variant in May by the WHO. Well, the "variant of the variant" was named "Delta Plus" or "AY.1", and according to the very first studies on its dangerousness it would have shown to be resistant to therapeutic treatment with the cocktail of monoclonal antibodies recently authorized by the health authorities of New Delhi.

However, the experts added that at the moment there would be no immediate cause for concern as its incidence in the country would still be low. According to the health bulletin published on the ministry's website,

India has recorded 60,471 new infections in the last 24 hours

as well as another 2,726 deaths caused by Covid-19. With these numbers, the total number of infections diagnosed in the country rose to 29,570,881, of which 377,031 were fatal. But today is the eighth consecutive day that India has less than 100,000 new infections in 24 hours.

In Brazil, 39 thousand infections in 24 hours

Yesterday, according to the latest bulletin available, Brazil recorded 827 new deaths from Covid and 39,846 further infections for a total that has now reached 17,452,612 infections and 488,228 deaths since the beginning of the health crisis. The mortality rate remains at 2.8%, equal to 232.3 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. The state of Sao Paulo continues to lead the ranking of cases and deaths, with 3,464,158 and 118,213 respectively. The highest lethality rate, however, is that recorded in Rio de Janeiro, with 5.8%, followed by São Paulo with 3.4% and the Amazon states, with 3.3%. Among the states most affected by the pandemic are also Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Bahia.

Colombia, record number of deaths

The Covid alarm rises in Colombia, where today for the third day in a row the death record was broken with 588 victims in 24 hours, two more than yesterday, bringing the number of deaths from pandemics in the country to 96,366. During the day, 24,376 new infections were also reported for a total of 3,777,600 cases, of which 158,928 active, or 4.2% of the total. Health Minister Fernando Ruiz blamed the situation in Colombia today, with a third elongated peak that began last April, to massive anti-government demonstrations that began at the very end of the fourth month of the year, although for the most part they are already ceased.

In Argentina, over 21,000 new cases and 687 deaths

Argentina has reached 86,029 deaths from Covid: in the last 24 hours, another 687 victims have been notified, with 21,292 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 4,145,482. The data reveal an increase compared to the positives recorded on Sunday, 13,043, although on weekends the number of cases recorded is usually lower. Argentina recorded a daily record of cases on May 27, with 41,080 infections, while the highest number of deaths in a single day was reached on May 18, with 745 deaths.

Tunisia, slow vaccination

The national vaccination campaign that began on March 13 is proceeding slowly in Tunisia: according to data from the Ministry of Health, so far only 1,381,614 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 368,616 both doses out of a population of almost 12 million inhabitants. Tunisia therefore remains far from the 3 million vaccinated people announced for the month of June. Ines Fradi, an official of the Ministry of Health of Tunis and responsible for the logistics of the vaccination campaign, estimated that the vaccination rate is constantly increasing but admitted that the number of vaccinated remains below expectations: only 11% of Tunisians, according to Fradi, received the Coronavirus vaccine three months after the launch of the national immunization campaign. Tunisia, which is going through a fourth wave of coronavirus infections, has recorded 370,224 confirmed cases and 13,567 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic.
