The lockdown was a burden for most catering establishments, but it brought a boom to the pizzerias - reason enough for the Rhein-Main-Zeitung to go in search of the best pizza in Frankfurt and also to rely on the judgment of the readers.

At the start of our big pizza test, the editors were able to present their favorite Frankfurt pizzeria, then it was the readers' turn: Within a few days we received hundreds of e-mails, often with a phrase like "The best pizza in Frankfurt is of course .." . ".

In a third step, we then made a list of the best rated restaurants for selection.

And after more than 4,500 readers voted for their favorites, the enjoyment group of the editorial team has now gone and tested the three top pizzerias again, for mozzarella and tomato, salami and ham, Margherita and Spinaci. At the reader's favorite "Da Cimino", a student classic in Bockenheim with decades of tradition, as well as at "Giulio" and "Charly Braun" (also known as "Charly Brown"), pizza classics were ordered without notice, corona-compliant at a distance and authentically the pizza box eaten in nearby parks and rated together. There are probably dozen other pizzerias in the city that would have deserved a chance in the competition, especially since the freestyle is of course also influenced by subjective impressions, coincidence,Daily form and perhaps also the more or less well-organized advertising for votes from one's own customers was influenced. For us, however, the winner has now been determined. But read for yourself. And watch the video test at www.faz.net/pizzatest.

"Charly Braun": middle class on Habsburgerallee

No, the pizzeria is called "Charly Braun".

        And not "Charlie Brown".

Even if Google consistently displays the English word.

An allusion to the peanuts is expected, but there are many indications that the spelling is incorrect.

Because nowhere is a reference to the comic figure to be found.

From the outside, the restaurant looks like an extremely ordinary and actually uninviting take-away pizzeria with a faded awning.

The empty pizza boxes are stacked behind the shop window on the first floor of a 1950s apartment building.

The phone number to order is pasted in large numbers on the shop window.

Next to it is: "All dishes to take away too!"

Eating the pizza beyond this place should be the usual way for most customers anyway. Outside there would be space for a couple of high tables, the lack of which is probably due to the Corona rules. The standing room would not be comfortable, however, because the Habsburgerallee leads directly past “Charly Braun”. So it's best to grab the cardboard boxes and look for a nice spot. On the way there, we speculate whether the pizzas including the carton are smaller than those of the tested competition. We probably accidentally ordered the “little ones” with a diameter of 24 centimeters. In front of us are the Margherita, the Caloveto and the Spinaci.
