In May, the airport operator Fraport counted a total of 1.25 million passengers.

Compared to May of the last pre-crisis year 2019, this means a decrease of 80 percent.

Compared to May of last year, in which air traffic practically came to a standstill, the current number of passengers means an increase of 356.9 percent, albeit from a level close to zero.

Regardless of this, the airport operator recognizes concrete signs of a recovery in air traffic this May: more than 50,000 passengers used Frankfurt Airport on four days.

Such daily values were last seen in the recovery phase in the summer of a year ago, when the industry was already hoping that the height of the pandemic and the associated paralysis of air traffic had been overcome.

In fact, this proved to be a mistake and the numbers fell back to dramatic lows shortly afterwards.

This time, however, Fraport AG sees a more stable trend towards recovery: due to the many travel warnings that have been repealed and the steady decline in new infections in many places, bookings for travel destinations within Europe are reportedly increasing.

In the first five months of the year taken together, Frankfurt Airport counted 4.7 million passengers, but in comparison to the month of the pre-crisis year 2019 this is still a minus of 82.6 percent.
