Already at the beginning of June, many bathers at Nydalasjön in Umeå began to get itchy rashes, so-called bath itching, after the intestinal worm called cercaria penetrated under the skin.

According to environmental inspector Björn Eriksson, we can count on this development in general for lakes and watercourses in the county.

- They occur in fresh and brackish water, so we will have them in our lakes and along the coast, he says.

Bathe quickly and deeply

The simple advice from the municipality to avoid the parasites may not be a dream of a toddler's parent to hear;

bathe quickly and deeply.

And to dry thoroughly and shower afterwards.

However, most bathing areas do not have outdoor showers.

At Nydala they are only inside the outdoor swimming pool Umelagun which is located near the beach, to get there you have to pay admission.

- Here at Nydala, you could arrange outdoor showers near the bathing area so that you take a quick shower.

But you could also build longer bridges so that you get into deeper water because there is much less risk, says Björn Eriksson.
