Several Malawian diplomats living in South Africa have been expelled from the country by the authorities.

They were suspected of illicit sale of alcohol, Malawi's foreign ministry said on Friday.

South African authorities have given diplomats 72 hours to pack their bags.

Their ministry "regretted" that they were declared "persona non grata" but pledged to take disciplinary action upon their return to Malawi.

Other similar investigations in progress

Diplomats have allegedly abused their diplomatic privileges.

They were "found guilty of participating in an illicit tax-free alcohol trade," the South African Department of International Relations said in a statement.

According to the government, further investigations into other diplomats based in South Africa "are at an advanced stage."

"Similar measures" will be taken against suspects if they are found guilty.

Several diplomats from Lesotho have already been expelled on Thursday for similar reasons.

According to South African media, they would have sold imported alcohol to bars and restaurants without paying customs duties in order to pocket the difference.
