Ione Belarra is already the new leader of Podemos.

The purple militancy has elected her this Sunday as the new general secretary of the formation with 89% of the votes.

The IV Citizen Assembly of Podemos has concluded this Sunday in Alcorcón, where this weekend the various political projects that aspired to lead the party in this new stage have been debated.

In addition to the candidacy of Belarra, with an official profile and made up of a good part of the former leadership of the party, there were two other militants, critical of the previous administration: Fernando Barredo and Esteban Tettamanti.

According to the data provided by Podemos, the participation in this assembly has been 53,500 registered, somewhat lower than a year ago, when 58,000 militants cast their vote in the last meeting that ratified Pablo Iglesias as purple leader.

This assembly was held telematically due to the pandemic.

In this way, Belarra becomes the successor of Pablo Iglesias at the controls of Podemos.

He also succeeded the former second vice president of the Government in the Council of Ministers, where he assumed the portfolio of Social Rights when Iglesias decided to run for the Madrid elections.

Of great confidence for Iglesias, Belarra until then held the Secretary of State for the 2030 Agenda, a position now coordinated by Enrique Santiago, leader of the PCE.

With the confirmation of Ione Belarra as the new secretary general of Podemos, the new two-headed model that was designed for the United Podemos coalition was completed after the hasty departure of Iglesias on 4-M by not reaping the expected results to stop the entry of the right in the Government of the Community of Madrid.

In this new scheme for the coalition, it will be the third vice president of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, who heads the purple wing of the Council of Ministers and the parliamentary group of United Podemos, while the course of Podemos will remain in the hands of Ione Belarra .
