Austria, battered throughout the match, ended up winning against a valiant team from North Macedonia 3 goals to 1 Sunday in Bucharest for their entry into the running in Group C of the Euro.
This is Austria's first victory in the history of continental competition.
The Austrian goals were scored by Lainer, with an acrobatic recovery in full extension that surprised the Macedonian rearguard (18th), Gregoritsch on a tense cross (78th) and the inevitable Arnautovic (89th).
The emblematic Macedonian captain Goran Pandev equalized by taking advantage of a gross disagreement between goalkeeper Bachmann and David Alaba embarrassed by the pressing of Macedonian Trajkovski (28th).
In the same Group C, the Netherlands face Ukraine on Sunday evening (19:00 GMT) in Amsterdam.
