American director, screenwriter and actor Dennis Berry, who was the husband of New Wave icons Jean Seberg and then Anna Karina, died on Saturday at the age of 76, his agent told AFP on Sunday.

"The director Dennis Berry died in Paris on June 12 at 9.45 a.m. Surrounded by all the love of his friends, he left to find Anna Karina", who died in 2019, said his agent Ouarda Benlaala.

Born in the United States, Dennis Berry had lived in Paris since the 1970s. In 1972 he married the American actress Jean Seberg, the student with whom Jean-Paul Belmondo fell in love in Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless" in 1960.

The couple is already separated when the actress died in Paris in 1979.

In 1982, he married another icon of the New Wave, the Danish Anna Karina, who appeared in several films by Jean-Luc Godard, including "Pierrot Le Fou".

This is a fourth marriage for Anna Karina, and it will be the last.

In 2018, she noted, somewhat incredulously, "I have been married for nearly 40 years with the same man", during an interview with AFP.

Dennis Berry, son of John Berry, also director, has multiplied the small roles alongside stars like Alain Delon or Jean-Paul Belmondo (in "Borsalino") and even Johnny Hallyday and under the direction of filmmakers like Jules Dassin, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Carlo Lizzani, Jacques Deray or André Téchiné.

As a director, he notably signed in 1975 "Le Grand Délire" - his first film - with Jean Seberg and Isabelle Huppert.

In 2017, he devoted a documentary to his wife: "Anna Karina, remember".

His latest film, "Savages", was released in 2019.

Dennis Berry has also directed several television series, such as "Highlander" - where Marion Cotillard takes her first steps in an episode in 1992 -, "Stargate Sg-1" or "La Crim '".
