At least 12 people have been killed and 39 seriously injured in a gas explosion in the city of
Shiyan
in central China's Hubei province on Tuesday, state agency Xinhua reported.
The explosion occurred at 6.30 a.m. local time (22.30 GMT on Saturday) in a housing community in the
Zhangwan
district of
Shiyan, where
a nearby market
was also
seriously damaged
, according to government sources quoted by the official
China Daily
.
Xinhua said that the incident caused
more than 100 injuries
, including 39 serious, and that several people were trapped in their homes as a result of the explosion.
Around noon, rescue teams
managed to remove 150 people from the rubble
, 12 of them dead and 39 seriously injured, who are currently receiving hospital treatment.
The causes of the accident are still unknown.
Images distributed on social networks show several
houses with their doors and windows destroyed

Almost 200 firefighters and 40 police officers have been dispatched to the area, along with 38 emergency vehicles and six sniffer dogs.
The governor of Hubei,
Wang Zhonglin
, has also gone to the scene of the incident, as well as teams from the Ministry of Emergency Management of China.
