The metropolitan region of Santiago de Chile began new containment this Saturday in order to combat the recent increase in Covid-19 cases, despite a major vaccination campaign.

This is the third time that the Chilean authorities have decreed this massive containment measure since the first case of coronavirus was detected in the country, on March 3, 2020. This measure has been variously welcomed.

Some support it, others stress that the poor need to go out to work.

A well-advanced vaccination campaign

As of Saturday, the country recorded 7,624 cases and 107 deaths, for a total of more than 1.4 million cases and more than 30,000 deaths.

Chile, a country of 19 million people, has already vaccinated 11.3 million people with at least one dose, and 8.8 million with two doses.

But advances in vaccination have not stopped cases from continuing to rise.

The country has so far received 22.7 million doses of the vaccines.
