Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that the era of quotas in elections is over, and this comes as Algerians head to the polls tomorrow, Saturday, to elect their new deputies.

During his visit, yesterday, Thursday, to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Authority to review the preparations for the polls, Tebboune described the quotas in the elections as "the era of ignorance."

He said that the legislative elections are an opportunity for real representation and the success of those chosen by the people.

The Algerian president stressed that the elections on Saturday are an opportunity for young people, intellectuals and the financially vulnerable.

He stressed that the electoral law punishes any violations, especially with regard to the use of corrupt money.

The Algerian News Agency said that the President of the Republic directed the need to "protect the voice of every citizen in order to bypass previous practices that would prejudice the confidence of citizens in their institutions."

Meanwhile, the head of Algeria's Independent National Electoral Authority, Mohamed Sharafi, said that the percentage of participation in the outside vote has not yet reached.

Sharafi added in a previous interview with Al-Jazeera that the National Elections Authority has developed a program to explain the mechanism of the election process, according to a training program for its cadres deployed at home and abroad in order to facilitate procedures for voters.

And yesterday, Thursday, voting began abroad, and had begun before that in remote areas inside Algeria, where mobile ballot boxes were allocated for about 33,000 voters in the far south.

More than 24 million Algerians are entitled to vote in the first legislative elections since the start of the popular movement.

According to the National Election Authority, about 23,000 candidates, divided equally between parties and independent lists, are competing for 407 seats in the People's National Assembly (the first chamber of parliament).
