The Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly announced on Friday June 11 the death of the jihadist cadre of Aqmi Baye Ag Bakabo, the commando leader who had kidnapped our colleagues Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon on November 2, 2013 in Kidal in northern Mali.

But for those close to them, the death of the jihadist deprives them of many answers.

The Minister of the Armed Forces specified that on the day of June 5, Barkhane's soldiers detected the preparation of a terrorist operation in northern Mali in Aguelhok and which targeted a Minusma position.

A successful operation eliminated 4 terrorists

including Baye Ag Bakabo

.

It is this man who drove the pick-up used for the kidnapping of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon.

Their bodies were found less than two hours later, a dozen kilometers from Kidal.

After the announcement of the elimination of this jihadist leader, it is disappointment and sadness that dominate for Danièle Gonod, the president of the Association of Friends of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon.

The relatives of our colleagues still have many questions.

From the beginning, we have wondered about the motives of the kidnappers. We were told of a simple villainy on the part of jihadists, the money was put forward. But Ghislaine and Claude were also working on a number of difficult files. They were kidnapped when the hostages were released from Arlit. So we need to know what the real motives were, maybe money was the priority, but maybe it wasn't the only motive. We have a lot of questions around the circumstances of the kidnapping, the pursuit of the kidnappers, how they died. We need this truth. Families, association and friends will never be appeased until we have a minimum of information on the truth of this tragedy.

"

Questions that Baye Ag Bakabo could have answered, points out Marie Dosé, lawyer for the Association of Friends of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon. "

We would have liked so much to see him in a box of an assize court to answer for his actions, to answer our questions and those of the magistrates. This is all that this operation deprives us of. We are deprived of his version, of his explanation. It is the very heart of the operation of the kidnapping of the assassination of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon. We were so afraid that this operation would one day rob us of the truth. This is what is happening. All the questions remain unanswered and that is what is terrible for the civil parties. The investigation continues, the investigating magistrate continues to instruct. There are other people involved, there are other people to question, to hear and to judge. We hope so anyway.

 "

Reporters Without Borders is not satisfied with the news of the death either. "

It will in no way contribute to the manifestation of the truth, quite the contrary,"

believes Arnaud Froger, head of the Africa office at RSF.

It is a witness, perhaps even a leading official who disappears. What RSF and those close to Ghislaine and Claude are waiting for is to find out what happened and this is a form of legal response. If the protagonists and those responsible for this kidnapping and double assassination die and disappear one after the other, there will unfortunately be no justice and perhaps it will be difficult to enlighten all areas of shadow which still surround this double assassination.
