China News Agency, United Nations, June 11 (Reporter Madelin) The 75th United Nations General Assembly held a plenary meeting on the 11th to elect the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Gabon, Brazil and Albania as non-permanent members of the Security Council. The term of office is from January 1, 2022. It will last for two years starting from Japan.

The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members. In addition to the 5 permanent members of China, the United States, Russia, Britain, and France, there are also 10 non-permanent members.

Non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly attended by all member states and must obtain more than two-thirds of the votes to be elected.

The 10 non-permanent council seats are allocated according to regional groups, with 2 seats in the Asia-Pacific region, 3 seats in Africa, 2 seats in Latin America and the Caribbean, 1 seat in Eastern Europe, and 2 seats in Western Europe and other countries.

In accordance with the principle of regional rotation, the seats for the election on the day were 1 in Asia-Pacific, 2 in Africa, 1 in Eastern Europe, and 1 in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The candidate countries in each regional group have no competitors.

In the end, Ghana received 185 votes, Gabon received 183 votes, United Arab Emirates received 179 votes, Albania received 175 votes, and Brazil received 181 votes, all of which were successfully elected.

This is the first time Albania has become a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo expressed its intention to compete for seats in the African group in May this year, but announced its abandonment of this intention in early June.

Despite this, the country still won 3 votes in favor of the vote on the 11th.

In addition, Iran and Peru each received 1 vote in favor.

The five countries elected this time will succeed Vietnam, Niger, Tunisia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Estonia in January 2022.

At present, the other five non-permanent members of the Security Council are India, Mexico, Ireland, Norway and Kenya, and they will serve until the end of 2022.

The term of office of non-permanent members of the Security Council is two years. After election, they are replaced by 5 members each year and cannot be re-elected.

At present, there are still more than 50 UN member states that have never become non-permanent members of the Security Council.
