Mississippi prisons became one of the first state prisons in the United States to begin mass vaccination in late March.

With over 17,000 inmates, the state's most populous prison, the Pearl Correctional Facility, came first.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), the agency overseeing the state's prison system, received 3,500 doses from the Mississippi State Department of Health.

This enabled them to vaccinate on a massive scale regardless of age or health.

One prison after another was vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to the MDOC, only one percent of inmates refused the vaccination, which is done on a voluntary basis.

However, the vaccination is linked to numerous relaxations in everyday prison life - inmates can only receive visits again after a full vaccination.
