The spread of the delta variant, which was first discovered in India, has increased in Sweden.

So far, 71 cases have been confirmed.

The variant is believed to have an increased dispersal ability compared with other variants, but more analyzes will be made.

The development still means that the Swedish Public Health Agency is tightening infection control measures in the regions of Värmland and Blekinge, where the delta variant has caused more cases of covid-19 last week, Anders Tegnell announced at Thursday's press conference.

- This means that we strengthen infection tracing, says Anders Tegnell.

The variant has been confirmed in a total of 11 regions and FHM is also reviewing the national infection control measures and whether they may need to be tightened, but at present it is hoped that the variant will not spread nationally.

Good protection after two doses

In England, the delta variant is now dominant, and the original variant of the coronavirus (alpha) is almost completely gone in the country.

According to some initial analyzes from England, the vaccination protection after one dose is considered to be slightly lower for the delta, but two doses should provide good protection.

To date, 24.3 percent of Sweden's adult population has been vaccinated with two doses, and 49.4 percent with one dose.

- There are many over 80 who have received a second dose and have good protection.

If you break out the most sensitive part of the population, 65 years and older, 91 percent have received at least one dose, says Anders Tegnell.

Does not affect the plan to open up

Tegnell does not believe that the delta variant can give rise to a fourth wave, and at present the delta variant is not considered to affect the plan for how the restrictions will be eased in the future.

At the same time, the authorities are prepared to be able to change facilities or measures should the need arise.

- The situation is not the same as last autumn when we were without vaccines.

But it is important that we follow developments closely and are prepared to stop easing or introducing further measures.
