The report also highlights the fact that in 2020 mortality in Italy was the highest ever recorded since the postwar period. A total of 746,146 deaths were recorded in the year of the pandemic, 100,526 more than the 2015-2019 average (15.6% excess). Considering the variations in the standardized mortality rates, then, mortality recorded a 9% increase in 2020, compared to the average for the five-year period 2015-2019; the regions that report significantly higher increases are Piedmont, Valle D'Aosta, Lombardy and the Autonomous Province of Trento.
