June 10, 2021 At the end of a long and articulate letter in which he agrees with his concerns about the pedophilia scandals that afflict the Church, Pope Francis has rejected the resignation of Cardinal Reinhard Marx who on June 10 last asked to leave. the leadership of the German diocese of Munich, due to the pedophilia scandal in Germany and the response he judged to be insufficient by the episcopate, tells Marx that the "ostrich policy leads nowhere" and that every bishop must take it upon himself and assume it the responsability.

The Pope, in the letter published in Spanish and German, thanks Marx for the "Christian courage which does not fear the cross, which is not afraid of being humiliated in the face of the terrible reality of sin".

Francis recalls that "the whole Church is in crisis because of the abuse" that "the Church today cannot take a step forward without assuming this crisis" because "the politics of the ostrich leads nowhere, and the crisis must be assumed by our Easter faith. Sociologisms and psychologisms are useless ". Therefore, "assuming the crisis, personally and as a community, is the only fruitful way because one does not get out of a crisis alone but in community".

The Pope then agrees with the description of the crisis proposed by Marx's letter: "I agree with you in describing the sad story of sexual abuse and the way in which the Church has dealt with it until recently. like a catastrophe. Realizing this hypocrisy in the way we live our faith is a grace, it is a first step we must take. We must take charge of history, both personally and as a community. We cannot remain indifferent in the face of this crime. . Accepting means putting oneself in crisis ".

It is true, Francis adds, "that historical situations must be interpreted with the hermeneutics of the time in which they occurred, but this does not exempt us from taking them on board and taking them on as the history of the 'sin that besieges us'. Therefore, according to me, every bishop of the Church must take him on and ask himself: what should I do in the face of this catastrophe? ".
