Facebook confirmed on Wednesday that it is working on a connected watch that could one day be linked to augmented reality glasses being designed by the social media giant.

Facebook Reality Labs is looking for ways to make these glasses more useful, Andrew Bosworth, a head of this unit, said in a tweet in response to information from The Verge that Facebook wants to unveil a smartwatch next year.

According to the specialist site, the watch will be equipped with cameras and will integrate with Facebook applications such as Instagram, its image-centric network.

“We said we want augmented reality glasses that are really useful - we're investing in technologies that will make this interaction more natural and intuitive,” Mr. Bosworth wrote.

"We will say more when we are ready," he added.

"And just like with our eyewear work, we'll be consulting with third-party experts to help us get it right."

Facebook had made public its plan to launch glasses connected to smartphones this year as part of an alliance with the optical giant EssilorLuxottica.
