US President Joe Biden arrived in Britain on Wednesday evening, on his first foreign trip since taking office last January.

The 8-day trip, which includes several European countries, aims to rebuild transatlantic relations, which were strained during the era of former President Donald Trump, and reformulate relations with Russia.

Joe Biden said that he will meet during his European tour with the leaders of the seven countries and the leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and then Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that he will confirm in all his meetings that the United States has returned to the leadership position.

Biden added, in a speech he delivered at the US Mildenhall base in Britain, that his country will be more able to promote its national interests when the countries that agree with the vision unite and defend their common values.

The trip is a test of the US president's ability to manage and repair relations with key allies who have been disillusioned with Trump's tariffs and his withdrawal from international treaties.

"Will the democratic alliances and institutions that have made up so much of the last century prove resilient to the threats and animosities of the modern age? I think the answer is yes. We have a chance to prove it this week," Biden wrote in an opinion piece for The Washington Post. in Europe".

Speaking to reporters on the tarmac as he departed for Europe, Biden said his goals were to "strengthen the alliance, and to make it clear to Putin and China that Europe and the United States are at the heart of one man."

His meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16 in Geneva will be the culmination of the trip, and an opportunity to raise US concerns directly with Putin about cyber attacks from Russia, Moscow's attacks on Ukraine, and a host of other issues.

Trip stations

Biden will make his first stop in the coastal village of St Ives in Cornwall, where he will participate in the G7 summit.

The meeting is expected to be dominated by trade and climate issues, vaccine diplomacy and an initiative to rebuild infrastructure in the developing world, and US officials see this initiative as a way to counter China's growing influence.

Biden will meet British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Thursday in Cornwall, an opportunity to inject new blood into the "special relationship" between the two countries after Brexit.

After the three-day G7 summit, Biden and his wife, Jill Queen Elizabeth, will visit Windsor Castle.

Biden, 78, met the Queen in 1982 when he was a Delaware senator.

He will then head to Brussels for talks with NATO and European Union leaders. Talks are expected to focus on Russia, China and the ever-present issue of increasing the alliance's contribution to the costs of mutual defense.

Putin meeting

On his last stop in Geneva, Biden will hold a meeting, perhaps the most difficult of the tour, with Putin, who has established friendly relations with Trump.

The US presidency did not release a few details of this meeting.

I only hinted that, unlike what happened with Donald Trump in Helsinki in 2018, the agenda does not include holding a joint press conference between the two men.

The White House, which alternates conciliatory messages and warnings, insists its expectations are low.

Its sole objective is to make relations between the two countries more "stable and predictable" with their development.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that Biden hopes his meetings with the Group of Seven and NATO will strengthen the sense of unity among allies before heading to his meeting with Putin.

Sullivan said that "Biden will pressure Putin on matters that are a priority for the United States, but the summit is not expected to result in major developments."
