The inquiry will focus on a fact-based analysis of data transfer on apps created in or controlled by China, according to a White House statement.

There are concerns about how the apps collect user data and whether there may be a connection to the Chinese military or intelligence activities, writes AP.

The US Department of Commerce will also look further into how to protect Americans' personal health data in the future and make recommendations for apps and software that have a China connection.

During his last months as president, Donald Trump signed an order banning Tiktok and Wechat in the United States, demanding that the companies be sold to American owners.

This after fears that the app was used as a spy tool.

Tiktok has just over 80 million users per month in the United States and hundreds of millions more in the rest of the world.
