According to reports, the South Korean judicial circle revealed on the 9th that Choi Sui-won, who is serving his sentence in Cheongju Women’s Prison, wrote to Moon Jae-in in May asking for pardon of Park Geun-hye.

In the letter, Choi appealed to Park Geun-hye to "have been detained for more than 4 years" and "hoped to amnesty for her so that she can spend her at home, who is exhausted physically and mentally."

The Blue House, which confirmed the letter, sent to Cui at the end of May, through the legal department of the department in charge, an official document of the result of the letter and visit with the content "pardon is the president's inherent authority, and will provide reference for pardon work in the future."

The report also said that a relevant person from the South Korean Ministry of Justice stated that “because there are many voices about the pardon, we only responded in the usual way of replying to the letter”, and “we did not follow the direction of the discussion.”

Park Geun-hye was impeached in March 2017 and lost judicial immunity due to the scandal involving “trustees in politics”. He was detained in a detention center on the 31st of the same month.

On January 14, 2021, the South Korean Supreme Court made a final judgment on Park Geun-hye’s “confidential involvement in government” and bribery cases, sentenced Park Geun-hye to 20 years in prison, fined 18 billion won, and recovered 3.5 billion won.

In addition, Park Geun-hye was sentenced to 2 years for violating the public office election law. Currently, Park Geun-hye has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

In April 2021, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that it was heartbreaking that former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak were serving sentences at the same time.

However, he also pointed out that two factors must be considered in pardoning Park Geun-hye and others. One is the consensus of the whole people, and the other is to be conducive to national unity.

According to a poll released by South Korea on January 8, more than half of South Korean citizens opposed the pardon of former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye.
