The Council of Ministers on Wednesday ended the mission of Yann Wehrling as French Ambassador for the Environment, a decision "deeply regretted" by the person concerned.

"I deeply regret this decision which further alienates the progressive environmentalists from the presidential majority, and dares not imagine that such a decision could have been motivated by partisan and political considerations", lamented in a statement Mr. Wehrling.

The elected MoDem said to take "note of the decision of the President of the Republic", "despite a solid record that he himself still welcomed a few weeks ago".

Initially, his mandate would run until the end of 2021, after the holding of the Congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in September in Marseille and the COP15 for biodiversity in October in China.

Former national secretary of the Greens, Yann Wehrling was appointed ambassador for the environment in December 2018, alongside in particular the "pole ambassador" Ségolène Royal, herself removed from her post by Emmanuel Macron in January 2020.

Regional councilor of Ile-de-France MoDem within the majority of outgoing president Valérie Pécresse (Free!), Yann Wehrling has decided to once again support him for the regional elections of June 20 and 27, while the presidential majority, of which the MoDem is part, has another candidate in the running, Laurent Saint-Martin (LREM).

This decision to dismiss him from his post was announced in early June from a government source.

Mr. Wehrling then said "await explanations".
